SHEAR STRENGTH OF SOFT INTACT CLAY AND SILTY STONES

THE RESULTS OF TRIAXIAL, DIRECT SHEAR AND SPLIT TENSION TESTS PERFORMED ON A LARGE NUMBER OF SANDSTONE AND SILTY CLAY STONE SPECIMENS ARE REPORTED. IT IS SHOWN THAT MULTIPLE STAGE TRIAXIAL TESTS MAY BE USED WITH GREAT ADVANTAGE TO OBTAIN BOTH THE PEAK STRENGTH AND THE RESIDUAL STRENGTH SHEAR STRESS PARAMETERS. THIS TECHNIQUE PROVED TO BE VERY VERSATILE AND SHOWED THAT IN EACH STAGE IT WAS POSSIBLE TO GO OVER THE PEAK STRENGTH TO MAKE SURE OF ITS VALUE WITHOUT NOTICEABLY IMPAIRING THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL. /AUTHOR/
