STABILITY OF A DAM FOUNDATION WITH THIN CLAY SEAMS /IN FRENCH/

EXPLORATORY BORINGS ON A DAM FOUNDATION HAD SHOWN HORIZONTAL THIN CLAY SEAMS IN A MASS OF SANDSTONE WHICH WAS OTHERWISE HOMOGENEOUS. THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF THE STABILITY OF THIS FOUNDATION ARE GIVEN. FOR THE CALCULATIONS, THE HETEROGENEOUS SANDSTONE-CLAY MASS IS REPRESENTED BY HOMOGENEOUS CONTINUUM, THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF WHICH IS ASSUMED SMALLER ALONG THE DIRECTION OF THE CLAY SEAMS. THE LIMIT EQUILIBRIUM RELATIONSHIP OF THE MASS IS WRITTEN: THE RESULT IS VALID ONLY BETWEEN TWO BOUNDS AND THUS SHOWS THAT INCLINED LOADS EXERTED BY A DAM ON ITS FOUNDATION ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE SLIDING ON THE CLAY SEAMS BEFORE PLASTICITY SETS UP IN THE WHOLE MASS.
