CLEVELAND TESTS AC TRACTION MOTORS
It is shown how with proper control of the applied voltage and frequency, a simple ac induction motor will perform as well as a series dc motor in traction service. The Wabco/Reliance Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Inverter Propulsion system converts constant-voltage dc power into variable-voltage, variable frequency ac, making possible precise torque and speed control of a simple ac "squirrel-cage" motor. The PWM inverter uses solid-state devices.
