AN INVESTIGATION OF METHODS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF ROCK

TENSILE STRENGTH TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON FIVE DIFFERENT ROCK TYPES; TWO LIMESTONES, TWO SANDSTONES, AND A GRANITE. DIRECT-PULL TESTS AND A NUMBER OF INDIRECT TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON A LARGE NUMBER OF SPECIMENS OF EACH ROCK TYPE. THE INDIRECT TESTS UTILIZED INCLUDED DIAMETRIC LOADING OF SOLID AND HOLLOW DISCS, AND HOOP-STRESS LOADING OF HOLLOW CYLINDERS. TESTS BASED ON ENDING AND INDENTATION WERE REJECTED AT THE OUTSET SINCE IT WAS FELT THAT THEY PRESENTED OBVIOUS EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL DIFFICULTIES. EXPERIMENTAL FACILITIES DESIGNED FOR THESE STUDIES ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED. TENSILE STRENGTH DATA OBTAINED FOR EACH ROCK TYPE USING THE DIFFERENT TEST METHODS ARE PRESENTED. SOME 500 SPECIMENS WERE TESTED. STATISTICAL DATA RELATING TO THE SCATTER OF TEST RESULTS AND THE OPTIMUM NUMBER OF TESTS REQUIRED TO GIVE RELIABLE DATA ARE ALSO INCLUDED. IN ALL CASES, STANDARD DEVIATIONS RARELY EXCEED 10%. USING SOME METHODS, STANDARD DEVIATIONS AS LOW AS 1% WERE OBTAINED. RESULTS INDICATED THAT EACH TEST METHOD YIELDED A SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT VALUE OF APPARENT TENSILE STRENGTH. A DISCUSSION IS PRESENTED WHICH CONSIDERS THIS PROBLEM AND ILLUSTRATES, IN THE CASE OF DIRECT- PULL AND HOOP-STRESS LOADING, HOW IT MAY BE OVERCOME. /AUTHOR/
