SOME METHODOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF ROCK MECHANICS

THE MAIN PROBLEM OF COMPLEX RESEARCH OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ROCK IN MORE THAN 40 LOCATED AND EXPLOITED DEPOSITS OF GEORGIA WAS TO GET INFORMATION REQUIRED FOR ESTIMATION OF ROCK SECURITY AND RESISTANCE TO RUPTURE CAUSED BY THE EFFECT OF EXTERNAL PHYSICAL FIELDS. FROM THE COMPARISON AND ANALYSIS OF INTERRELATION OF INDICES OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, IT FOLLOWS THAT FOR EACH CONCRETE PROCESS IT IS NECESSARY TO CHOOSE ONE OR MORE CHARACTERISTIC INDEXES. FURTHERMORE, THE ANALYSIS SHOWS THAT ESTIMATION OF STANDARD SIZES OF SPECIMENS FOR DETERMINATION OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES APPEARS BASICALLY INCORRECT. THE SIZES OF SPECIMENS FOR EACH ROCK SHOULD BE CHOSEN DIFFERENTIALLY, ON THE BASIS OF THE LARGEST SIZE OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS. AS A BASIS OF CLASSIFICATION OF ROCK BY MECHANICAL PROPERTIES (ACCORDING TO STRENGTH) IT IS NECESSARY TO USE THE PRINCIPLE OF GEOMETRIC PROGRESSION WITH DIFFERENTIATED (DECREASING) INDEX. FOR SOFT ROCKS WITH HETEROGENEITY AND GREAT VARIATION COEFFICIENT, THE INDEX HAS ITS MAXIMUM VALUE. FOR STRONG RELATIVELY HOMOGENEOUS ROCKS, IT BECOMES CONSTANT WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE ROUNDED INDEX. /AUTHOR/
