INFLUENCE OF CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES ON THE MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ROCKS

KNOWLEDGE OF THE PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ROCKS AT CRYOGENIC TEMPERATURES IS REQUIRED BY THE MODERN TECHNIQUES OF STORING LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS IN CAVERNS AND OF FREEZING SOILS FOR CONSTRUCTION. THE RESULTS OF A SERIES OF TESTS ARE PRESENTED. IT WAS FOUND THAT FREEZING DID NOT RESULT IN A NOTABLE DECREASES IN STRENGTH AND THAT MECHANICAL RESISTANCE AND YOUNG'S MODULUS OF DRY AND SATURATED ROCKS INCREASE IN CRYOGENIC CONDITIONS. LINEAR THERMAL CONTRACTION OF ROCKS SHOWED GREAT VARIABILITY BUT WAS ALWAYS SMALL IN MAGNITUDE.
