The design of a control system for d.c. compound traction motors is discussed where the compound coils are excited without losses from a battery. During the acceleration period, starting resistors are limiting the armature current. With all resistors short-circuit, the flux control starts and operates in such a way that the desired speed is obtained with a constant maximum acceleration. Then, speed is kept automatically at that value.
