Evaluating the Role of Weigh-In-Motion in Mechanistic Pavement Analysis
Accurate prediction of pavement response under diverse traffic loading depends on accurate traffic load spectra data used for mechanistic road modeling. Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) systems can be used for data collection and accurate determination of traffic load spectra in order to predict and monitor pavement damage in real time. Here, the authors calculate pavement primary strain response using a 3D orthotropic road structural primary response model called PSIPave3D™. Their evaluation demonstrates the importance of accurate traffic data when predicting strain response across specific road classes. The use of Conventional Performance transfer functions can result in a significant difference in the prediction of pavement fatigue and rutting life, based on conventional truck loadings on in-service roads in this research. The authors determined that shear strain behavior in all structural layers of typical road structures can be calculated across the traffic load spectra determined by WIM. Adding this to accurate material constitutive theory and road structural modeling can result in improved performance prediction of road structures based on accumulation of visco-plastic shear strains under repeated load spectra.
