The AlpTransit Junction Near Camorino

The Ceneri Base Tunnel that runs between Vigana and Vezia is comprised of twin tubes, each of which carries a single track that permits maximum speeds of 250 km/h for passenger trains and 160km/h for freight trains. A new junction, being created just outside the Giubiasco station, will connect to the line that runs along Lago Maggiore between Bellinzona and Locarno via Cadenazzo and the existing line between Bellinzona and Lugano. Because it is necessary that the railway keep running, complex planning and execution of the work is necessary to avoid impacts on the safety and efficiency of railway operations. A computation model makes it possible to forecast the long-term behavior of the track superstructure and thus guarantee the railway’s safety both theoretically and practically.
