MOVEMENT OF MOISTURE THROUGH SOILS

SUBDRAINS WERE INSTALLED AT FOUR SITES NEAR ITHACA, NEW YORK. OBSERVATIONS AT THESE SITES SUPPORT THE BELIEF THAT PROPERLY INSTALLED CUT-OFF TYPE SUBDRAINS WILL EFFECTIVELY REDUCE MOISTURE CONTENT ONLY IN SOILS WHERE THE EFFECTIVE GRAIN SIZE IS GREATER THAN 0.002 MM. A SIMPLE AUGER HOLE METHOD TO DETERMINE WHETHER A SITE WOULD BE EFFECTIVELY DRAINABLE IS PRESENTED. SUBDRAINS MORE THAN 4 FT. DEEP WILL REDUCE FROST HEAVING CONSIDERABLY, INCLUDING SOILS WITH EFFECTIVE GRAIN SIZE LESS THAN 0.002 MM.
