DISCUSSION ON NONLINEAR ANALYSIS OF STRESS AND STRAIN IN SOILS

THE DISCUSSION IS LIMITED TO THE AUTHORS' EXPRESSION FOR THE TANGENT MODULUS AND ITS APPLICATION TO DETERMINE LOAD-SETTLEMENT RELATIONSHIPS BELOW FOUNDATIONS. FIGURES ARE ADDUCED IN WHICH THE STRESS DIFFERENCE AXIAL STRAIN CURVE FOR THE STRESS PATH, ON WHICH THE TANGENT MODULUS IS SAID TO BE DEPENDENT, DEVIATES FROM THE AUTHORS' CHOSEN HYPERBOLA. THE AUTHOR'S SELECTION IS ATTRACTIVE BECAUSE IT GIVES RESULTS ON THE SAFE SIDE FOR THE NORMAL INCREASING STRESS PATHS. THE WRITER DISCOVERED THAT THE TREND OF THEIR CURVES LEADS CLEARLY TO LARGE ERRORS EXCEPT FOR LARGE SAFETY FACTORS. IN THIS LATTER CASE, HOWEVER, THE CONSOLIDATION TEST GIVES THE BEST AND SIMPLEST APPROXIMATE DATA TO COMPUTE SETTLEMENTS. THE WRITER PROPOSES THAT ACTUAL DRAINED STRESS PATHS BELOW FOUNDATIONS BE REPLACED BY INCREMENTS ALONG ANISOTROPIC CONSOLIDATION PATHS SHOWN IN FIGURES ACCOMPANYING HIS DISCUSSION.
