DISCUSSION ON MODEL STUDY OF LATERALLY LOADED PILES

THE AUTHORS HAVE PRESENTED INTERESTING INFORMATION ON THE BEHAVIOR OF SINGLE PILES AND PILE GROUPS UNDER AXIAL AND LATERAL LOADING. THE ANALYSIS WAS BASED UPON AN EQUATION CORRELATING THE MEASURED DEFLECTION WITH THE APPLIED LOAD AT GROUND SURFACE. THE EQUATION INCLUDED ONE DIMENSIONLESS PARAMETER IN THE CASE OF A SINGLE PILE, AND TWO DIMENSIONLESS PARAMETERS IN THE CASE OF A PILE GROUP CONNECTED WITH A SLAB. IT WAS STATED THAT THESE PARAMETERS DEPEND UPON THE RATIO OF THE EMBEDDED LENGTH TO THE RELATIVE STIFFNESS. THE WRITERS BELIEVE THESE VALUES MIGHT ALSO DEPEND UPON THE SCALE OF THE MODEL. IF TWO SYSTEMS (MODEL AND PROTOTYPE) ARE CONSIDERED, THE FORM OF THE EQUATION MIGHT CHANGE CONSIDERABLY WITH THE SCALE. IN THE CASE OF GROUP PILES, THE PROBLEM OF DEDUCING SIMILARITY PARAMETERS COULD BE SOLVED BY APPLYING TWO RELATIONSHIPS CONTINUED IN THE DISCUSSION. IT MIGHT BE OF INTEREST TO STUDY THE BEHAVIOR OF PILES AND PILE GROUPS UNDER STRATIFIED SOIL CONDITIONS. THE ASSUMPTION OF TRIANGULAR VARIATION OF SUBGRADE MODULUS WITH RESPECT TO DEPTH MIGHT BE MODIFIED; A MODIFIED HRENNIKOFF METHOD OF ANALYSIS SHOULD BE DERIVED FOR THIS CASE. /DISCUSSER/
