CLOSURE ON TESTS ON COHESIONLESS MATERIALS FOR ROCKFILL DAMS

IN HIS DISCUSSION OF THE AUTHOR'S PAPER, WILKINS INTRODUCED A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS THAT SHOWED THE AUTHOR'S TEST RESULTS TO BE ROUGHLY IN AGREEMENT WITH ASSUMPTIONS MADE BY WILKINS IN A PREVIOUS PAPER. THIS COINCIDENCE IS ENCOURAGING BUT IT CERTAINLY DOES NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AS FURTHER STUDY IS NEEDED PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT THEORIES VALIDLY APPLICABLE IN PRACTICE. IN ANY CASE, IT IS PROVED THAT IN TESTS OF COMPRESSIBILITY WITH LATERAL CONFINEMENT AND, THEREFORE, WITHOUT INTERLOCKING FORCES, THE EQUILIBRIUM ANGLE IS EXTREMELY SMALL, I.E., 23--25 DEG, AND FAIRLY COINCIDENT FOR THE VARIOUS MATERIALS TESTED. THERE REMAINS THE QUESTION OF WHETHER THESE ANGLES DO NOT REPRESENT EXTREME VALUES FOR GRANULAR FILL WHEN THE INTERLOCKING FORCES BECOME NEGLIGIBLE WITH RESPECT TO THE STRESS IN PLAY. THESE MIGHT BE THE VALUES TO WHICH THE TANGENTS AT THE INTRINSIC RUPTURE CURVES OBTAINED IN TRIAXIAL TESTS TEND WHEN THE ISOTROPIC STATE OF STRESS TENDS TO INFINITY. AS TO MODELING A PURE ROCKFILL EMBANKMENT, I.E., A GRANULAR FILL MASS WITH A LARGE AMOUNT OF VOIDS AND IN WHICH THE PORE PRESSURE IS NOT OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE, RESEARCH AT THE AUTHOR'S INSTITUTE HAS GREATLY ADVANCED IN COMPLYING WITH THE SIMILITUDE OF THE BASIC PARAMETERS ENTERING INTO THE SETTLEMENT PROCESSES OUTLINED IN THE WRITER'S PAPER.
