DISCUSSION OF BEARING CAPACITY OF FOUNDATIONS ON SAND

THE AUTHORS HAVE PRESENTED A VERY INTERESTING APPROACH TO THE SUBJECT OF THE ULTIMATE BEARING CAPACITY OF STRIP FOOTINGS ON COHESIONLESS MATERIALS BY CONSIDERING THE ANGLE OF FRICTION BETWEEN THE FOOTING BASE AND THE UNDERLYING MATERIAL AND AN INDEPENDENT VARIABLE, OBTAINING A SOLUTION FOR THE MINIMUM VALUE OF TWO N COEFFICIENTS (GAMMA AND GAMMA Q). FROM THE CURVES GIVEN IN THE PAPER IT IS EVIDENT THAT THE RESULTS COMPARE FAVORABLY WITH ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF OTHER AUTHORS WHILE THE METHOD HAS THEORETICAL ADVANTAGES IN DEVELOPING THE BEARING CAPACITY FACTORS. COMPARISON OF THE AUTHORS' RESULTS WITH EXPERIMENTAL OBSERVATIONS PROVIDED BY OTHERS IS ALSO FAVORABLE. /DISCUSSER/
