WASHINGTON'S LANDSLIDE SURVEY (A PROGRESS REPORT)

POPULATION PRESSURES (ESPECIALLY IN PUGET SOUND) AS WELL AS EXPANDING IRRIGATION AND RESERVOIR CONSTRUCTION MEAN THAT LANDSLIDES IN WASHINGTON WILL BECOME MORE FREQUENT AND MORE DANGEROUS THAN IN THE PAST. MUCH OF THE SLIDE INFORMATION NOW EXISTING IS IN PRIVATE REPORTS, STUDIES BY GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES, OR OTHER UNPUBLISHED FORMS AND THUS IS EITHER UNKNOWN OR PRACTICALLY UNAVAILABLE TO ANY BUT THOSE DIRECTLY INVOLVED. WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES IS ATTEMPTING TO IMPROVE THIS SITUATION BY (1) DEVELOPING A CONTINUING EDGE-NOTCHED, KEYSORT CARD FILE CONTAINING DATA AND CHARACTERISTICS ON ALL KNOWN SIGNIFICANT SLIDES, ANCIENT AS WELL AS PRESENTLY ACTIVE, AND (2) COMPILING A BIBLIOGRAPHY ON LANDSLIDES IN THE STATE TO INCLUDE PUBLISHED AND UNPUBLISHED INFORMATION. PRESENT PLANS CALL FOR THE PUBLICATION OF MAPS OR MAP OVERLAYS SHOWING SLIDES AND THEIR EXTENT, WITH A BRIEF REPORT DISCUSSING SLIDES IN GENERAL AND THE LANDSLIDE "PROVINCES" OF THE STATE, AIMED PRIMARILY AT PLANNERS, DEVELOPERS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. IT IS HOPED THAT INDIVIDUALS AND OTHER AGENCIES WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CARD FILE IN RETURN FOR A DUPLICATE FILE OR REGIONAL SUBFILE. IN THIS WAY THE PROJECT SHOULD BE SELF UPDATING. /AUTHOR/
