Engineering Problems and Mitigation for Design, Construction, and Operation of the Mo'he Airport in Northeastern China in the Boreal Forest Zone

The permafrost area in China is about 2.15×106km2, and mainly distributed in the Tibetan Plateau, Northeast China and the mid-west mountainous areas. Although engineering construction increased gradually in permafrost regions with the development of society and science technology, there was no precedent case for airport construction in permafrost regions two years ago. Mo'he Airport, the first airport in the permafrost region in China, has been established since 2008. Some solutions to permafrost problems have been implemented for airport construction at Mo'he Airport. Changing ground temperature, frost heaving and thaw settlement which belong to the research scope, and key techniques of engineering construction such as: Mo'he Airport design principles, frozen subsoil improvement, heat insulation material and replacement, sharp interface processing, and measures of waterproofing and drainage are introduced and proposed for permafrost regions.
