CLOSURE ON CYCLIC STRESS-STRAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF CLAY

SHERIF POINTS OUT THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE MINOR EFFECT WHICH CYCLIC LOADING AT SMALL STRAIN LEVELS HAS ON STATIC STRENGTH AND THE MORE IMPORTANT EFFECT WHICH THE SAME LOADING HAS ON DYNAMIC MODULI. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT THE EFFECTS ON STRENGTH MIGHT BE BETTER UNDERSTOOD IF THE PROCEDURES USED TO DETERMINE STRENGTH WERE EXPLAINED MORE FULLY. THIS EXPLANATION IS PRESENTED. ALSO, SHERIF CAUTIONS THAT THESE EXPERIMENTS WERE CONDUCTED AT ONE FREQUENCY LEVEL AND DIFFERENT CONCLUSIONS MIGHT BE REACHED AT OTHER FREQUENCIES.
