DISCUSSION OF SAND LIQUEFACTION UNDER CYCLIC LOADING SIMPLE SHEAR CONDITIONS

TEST RESULTS WERE PRESENTED IN THE PAPER USING CYCLIC SIMPLE SHEAR LOADING CONDITIONS WHICH MORE ACCURATELY SIMULATE THE FIELD LOADING CONDITIONS DURING AN EARTHQUAKE. THESE RESULTS WERE COMPARED WITH PREVIOUSLY OBTAINED RESULTS USING CYCLIC TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS. WITH ALL OTHER TEST CONDITIONS KEPT CONSTANT, THE AUTHORS' COMPARISON OF MAXIMUM SHEAR STRESS TO CAUSE LIQUEFACTION IN THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF CYCLES IS BASED ON: (1) AXIAL STRAIN IN CYCLIC COMPRESSION TESTS AND SHEAR STRAIN IN CYCLIC SIMPLE SHEAR TESTS, AND (2) A FREQUENCY OF 2 CYCLES PER SECOND IN CYCLIC COMPRESSION TESTS AND FREQUENCY OF 1 CYCLE PER SECOND IN THE CYCLIC SIMPLE SHEAR CONDITIONS. MODIFICATION OF THE RESULTS PRESENTED IS OVERPLOTTED ON A FIGURE PRESENTED TO COMPATIBLE MAGNITUDES OF SHEAR STRAIN. THE DIVERGENCE BETWEEN THE RESULTS OF THE CYCLIC SIMPLE SHEAR TESTS AND CYCLIC COMPRESSION TESTS BECAME PRONOUNCED. THE EFFECT OF FREQUENCY VARIATION, AS STATED BY THE AUTHORS, IS DIFFICULT TO ESTIMATE. THIS WRITER CONTENDS THAT CYCLING FREQUENCY SHOULD HAVE ALMOST NO EFFECT. SINCE THE RATE OF CHANGE OF APPLIED STRESS CONTROLS THE EFFECT OF VISCOUS COUPLING BETWEEN THE SOIL-WATER MIXTURE, IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE SHAPE AND THE FREQUENCY OF THE APPLIED LOADING MUST BE CONSIDERED. AUTHORS' COMMENTS ON THE POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF DIFFERING LOAD TRACE SHAPES OR EXPERIMENTAL DATA WHERE THIS HAS BEEN CONSIDERED IN LIQUEFACTION STUDIES WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
