DISCUSSION OF CYCLIC STRESS-STRAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF CLAY

THE AUTHORS HAVE SHED A GREAT DEAL OF LIGHT INTO THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF SENSITIVE SAN FRANCISCO BAY MUD CLAY UNDER PREASSIGNED CYCLIC-STRAIN APPLICATION. THE AUTHORS' CONCLUSION, THAT WHEN THE SAMPLES ARE SUBJECTED TO CYCLIC STRAINS OF CONSTANT AMPLITUDES PRODUCING SHEARING STRAINS OF LESS THAN 1.5 PERCENT, THE UNDISTURBED STATIC STRENGTH OF THE SOIL IS VIRTUALLY UNAFFECTED BY 200 CYCLES OF STRAINING IS PUZZLING TO MR SHERIF, IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT BOTH DY- NAMIC MODULI APPEAR TO BE AFFECTED BY THE INCREASING NUMBER OF CYCLES AT PRACTICALLY ALL STRAIN LEVELS. IT MUST BE REMEMBERED THAT THESE EXPERIMENTS WERE OBTAINED UNDER ONE FREQUENCY LEVEL. FOR OTHER FREQUENCIES, THE CONCLUSIONS MAY BE DIFFERENT.
