STABILITY ANALYSIS OF SLOPING CORE EMBANKMENTS

A METHOD WAS RECENTLY DEVELOPED FOR ANALYZING THE STABILITY OF A SLOPING CORE EMBANKMENT. THE ANALYSIS REQUIRES THE DETERMINATION OF THE MOST CRITICAL SLIDING BLOCKS BY TRIAL AND ERROR METHODS. THIS TECHNICAL NOTE ASSUMES AN EMBANKMENT TO BE IN A STATE OF COMPRESSIONAL PLASTIC EQUILIBRIUM AT THE MOMENT OF FAILURE AND USES THE MOHR DIAGRAM TO CONSTRUCT THE FOOT-LINE FIELD FOR THE EMBANKMENT UNDER CONSIDERATION, THE SURFACES BETWEEN CRITICAL SLIDING BLOCKS ARE DETERMINED AT ONCE. THE NEED IS, THEREFORE, ELIMINATED FOR UTILIZING SIMPLIFYING ASSUMPTIONS. RESULTS SHOW THAT BY UTILIZING THE MOHR DIAGRAM TO CONSTRUCT THE SLIP-LINE FIELD FOR A SLOPING CORE EMBANKMENT, THE CRITICAL SLIDING BLOCKS ARE DETERMINED QUICKLY AND WITH A MINIMUM OF EFFORT.
