SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE IS A METHOD OF CONTROLLING THE MOISTURE CONTENT OF SUBGRADE SOILS AND BASE COURSES FOR PAVEMENTS BY RESTRICTING THE ENTRANCE OF WATER OR PROVIDING MEANS FOR ITS ESCAPE, OR IN SPECIAL CASES, PREVENTING EXCESSIVE LOSS OF WATER. FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED ARE CLIMATE, SOIL, GROUNDWATER, CAPILLARITY AND PERMEABILITY, ROAD LOCATION, SURFACE DRAINAGE, SUBSURFACE DRAINS, INTERCEPTION DRAINS, WATER TABLE DRAINS, DRAINAGE OF GRANULAR BASES, ECONOMICS, UNDERDRAIN CONSTRUCTION, AND UNDERDRAIN FAILURES. BASIC PRINCIPLES OF LOCATION, DESIGN, AND CONSTRUCTION ARE PRESENTED AND THEIR APPLICATIONS ARE ILLUSTRATED.
