FURTHER MEASUREMENTS OF FOUNDATION SETTLEMENTS IN THE FT. RANDALL DAM EMBANKMENT

SETTLEMENT MEASUREMENTS OF THE FOUNDATION SOIL BETWEEN THE FT. RANDALL DAM AT THE TIME OF CONSTRUCTION ARE COMPARED WITH MEASUREMENTS CONTINUING OVER THE LAST 13 TO 16 YEARS. A NUMBER OF COMBINATION PIEZOMETERS AND SETTLEMENT PLATES WITH RISER PIPES WERE INSTALLED THROUGH WHICH THE SETTLEMENT OF THE NATURAL GROUND SURFACE COULD BE MEASURED BOTH DURING CONSTRUCTION OF THE EMBANKMENT AND AFTER ITS COMPLETION. EIGHT EXPLORATORY BORE HOLES, CHOSEN BECAUSE OF THEIR PROXIMITY TO TWELVE OF THE SETTLEMENT GAUGE POINTS, WERE SELECTED AS REPRESENTING THE CHARACTER OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE SOIL. IT WAS CONCLUDED IN THE 1957 PAPER THAT GENERAL AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE ESTIMATED SETTLEMENTS AND THE ACTUAL MEASURED SETTLEMENTS WAS GOOD. THE RESULTS STRENGTHENED CONFIDENCE IN THE THEORY OF CONSOLIDATION AND THE METHODS OF APPROACH EMPLOYED. THE MEASURED RATES OF SETTLEMENT LEAD TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE ASSUMPTION OF DOUBLE DRAINAGE OF THE COMPRESSIBLE LAYER WAS THE MOST APPROPRIATE. ADDITIONAL MEASURED SETTLEMENT DATA DO NOT JUSTIFY A REVISION OF THE 1957 CONCLUSIONS.
