SHEAR STRENGTH OF SAND UNDER A VIBRATING LOAD

THIS PAPER PRESENTS SOME RESULS OF TESTS ON THE STRENGTH OF SATURATED AND DRY SANDS UNDER DRAINED TRIAXIAL VIBRATORY LOADING CONDITIONS. TRIAXIAL VIBRATING TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT UNDER THE FOLLOWING LOADING CONDITIONS: THE AMPLITUDES OF LATERAL CONFINING PRESSURES WERE KEPT CONSTANT AT 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, AND 1.0 KG/SQ CM; THE AMPLITUDE OF AXIAL PRESSURE WAS CONTROLLED SO THAT THE ANGLE BETWEEN THE NORMAL STRESS AND THE RESULTANT VIBRATING STRESS WAS IN ACCORD WITH THE ANGLE OF MOBILIZED INTERNAL FRICTION. COMPARISONS WERE MADE BETWEEN RESULTS OF TESTS ON SATURATED SANDS UNDER DRAINED TRIAXIAL VIBRATORY LOADING CONDITIONS AND THOSE OF STATIC TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE DYNAMIC STRENGTH OF SAND DEPENDS ON VARIOUS FACOTS, AND THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS WERE DRAWN UP: (1) THE ANGLE OF INTERNAL FRICTION OF SAND DECREASED WITH AN INCREASE IN AMPLITUDE OF THE LATERAL CONFINING PRESSURE. THIS TENDENCY TO STRENGTH-LOSS WAS OBSERVED TO BE INDEPENDIENT OF SURFACE ENERGY CORRECTIONS. THE OBSERVED ACCELERATIONS OF VIBRATION AT THE UPPER END OF THE SPECIMEN WERE OF THE ORDER OF 10-2G, AND THE EFFECT OF THIS ON THE STRENGTH OF THE SAND SEEMS TO BE NEGLIGIBLE. THE INFLUENCE OF VIBRATION FREQUENCY ON THE STRENGTH OF SAND WAS NOTICEABLE; THE HIGHER THE FREQUENCY BECAME THE LOWER THE STRENGTH WAS. (2) IN GENERAL, DYNAMIC STRENGTH INCREASES WITH AN INCREASE IN THE DENSITY OF SAND. /RRL/
