THE DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH-SPEED SOFT GROUND TUNNELING USING PRE-CAST CONCRETE SEGMENTS AND TUNNELING MACHINES
THE HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUPPORT IN SOFT GROUND TUNNELS IS TRACED FROM EARLY MINING DAYS AND THE REASONS ARE GIVEN FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF PRE-CAST CONCRETE LINING AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR CAST IRON SEGMENTS. VARIOUS TYPES OF CONCRETE LINING ARE DISCUSSED AND COMPARED IN DETAIL. THE SUCCESSFUL USE OF PRE-CAST CONCRETE LININGS DEPENDS ENTIRELY UPON THE ACCURACY OF THEIR MANUFACTURE. A DESCRIPTION IS GIVEN OF THE PRODUCTION OF MOLDS AND HOW THE ACCURACY OF THE MASTER MOLD IS MAINTAINED RIGHT THROUGH THE ENTIRE PROCESS, WITH COMMENT ON MANUFACTURING COSTS. A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE HISTORY OF SOFT GROUND TUNNELLING MACHINES, IS GIVEN, LEADING UP TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF TUNNELS IN LONDON CLAY AT THE RATE OF 1,250 FT PER WEEK. /RRL(A)/
