THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE FOR RAIL TRACTION

Gas turbine traction is being highlighted as a feature of modern trends and introduced by some administrations, in particular the SNCF. It proves to be a viable commercial proposition for highspeed passenger traffic and high specific out-put tractors. During the summer of 173 two sets of the SNCF RTG were introduced into Chicago-St. Louis and Chicago-Milwaukee. Further improvements in fuel consumption and wider application of the gas turbine in service will show if the turbo tractor will stay as a viable means for the present or is still an application of the future.
