An Optimization Model and Heuristic Algorithm for the Ro-Ro Ship Loading

The ro-ro ship loading optimization problem is discussed, in which some realistic restrictions such as vessel stability, loading efficiency and profit of voyage are considered. A 0–1 mixed integer programming model is proposed and a two-phase heuristics algorithm is developed on the basis of a greedy algorithm. Through an empirical research plus large-scale simulation experiments, the validity and practicability of the modeling and optimized algorithm are verified by means of comparisons with the exact solutions of small-sized problems and the loading plans from practical dispatching rules.
