BEARING CAPACITY OF SHALLOW STRIP FOOTINGS IN CLAY

THE BEARING CAPACITY OF A VERTICALLY AND CENTRALLY LOADED STRIP FOOTING PLACED BELOW A HORIZONTAL, UNLOADED SURFACE IN HOMOGENEOUS CLAY IN THE UNDRAINED STATE IS STUDIED BY MEANS OF THE THEORY OF PLASTICITY FOR IDEAL PLASTIC-RIGID MATERIALS. RESULTS ARE GIVEN FOR TWO TYPES OF LOWER-BOUND (KINEMATICALLY ADMISSIBLE) AND ONE UPPER-BOUND (STATICALLY ADMISSIBLE) SOLUTIONS. FROM THESE RESULTS THE MATHEMATICALLY CORRECT SOLUTION IS DERIVED IN PRINCIPLE, AND A SIMPLE NUMERICAL APPROXIMATION FORMULA IS PROPOSED. /RRL/
