LOAD DISPLACEMENT CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBGRADE SOIL

VARIOUS TYPES OF RIGID PLATE LOAD TESTS USING DIFFERENT PLATES DIAMETERS ARE CARRIED OUT ON ROORKEE SOIL INSITU CONDITION. THE DATA HAS BEEN PRESENTED AND ANALYZED WITH DIFFERENT APPROACHES. THE EFFECT OF SIZE OF LOADED AREA ON MODULUS OF SUBGRADE REACTION AND CO/EFFICIENT OF ELASTIC RM COMPRESSION IS ANALYZED. A METHOD OF PRESENTING THE LOAD SETTLEMENT DATA, WHICH IS INDEPENDENT OF SIZE AND SHAPE EFFECT IS GIVEN. FROM THIS, IT IS POSSIBLE TO PREDICT THE SETTLEMENTS PRECISELY FOR LOADED AREAS OF VARYING SIZES, MAKING THE NECESSARY CORRECTIONS FOR THE DEVIATIONS OF SOIL BEHAVIOR FROM THE ELASTIC THEORY. THE EFFECT OF CONFINEMENT ON THE STRENGTH AND LOAD DISPLACEMENT PHENOMENON OF THE SOIL SUBGRADE IS STUDIED. BASED ON THE STUDY, EVALUATION OF SUBGRADE STRENGTH BY CONFINED AND REPETITIVE TEST IS SUGGESTED FOR DESIGN OF HIGHWAY AND AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS. A/RRL/
