Risk Analysis and Management during Hazardous Materials Transportation

With special characteristics of easy leakage, flammability, and potential to explode during manufacturing, storage and transportation, hazardous materials can cause a disaster when accidents happen. Therefore, the risk control of hazardous materials transportation becomes a serious problem. A reformative model which modifies the transportation accident rate model is proposed by taking into consideration the speed and speed dispersion. This paper also shows that when speed is below 60 km/h, speed is the dominant factor to influence the accident rate, and the speed dispersion becomes the dominant one with the speed increases. Some suggestions on risk control of hazardous materials transportation are also proposed.
