Traffic Control Method of Urban Arterial under Ice and Snow Conditions

Many cities in the world lie in the regions of high latitudes with a longer and colder winter traffic condition, it not only takes effect on coordination, but also increases delays and stop rates in specific instances if using normal signal timing scheme under ice and snow conditions. At present, the results of coordination control methods on an urban arterial aiming at ice and snow conditions are little-reported. On the contrary, the traffic control still relies on common accumulated experience or conventional methods of traffic management department in most of cities under ice and snow conditions. Therefore, the study on various characteristics of traffic flow under ice and snow conditions and the optimization method of a corresponding urban arterial is of great significance and has broad application prospects. Based on large numbers of surveyed data, traffic control methods have been researched for the urban arterial of ice and snow using theories of calculus, probability and statistics and closed-loop control etc. By analyzing why signal timing parameters change under ice and snow conditions, the paper reveals the relationship of the friction coefficient with traffic signal timing parameters, analyzes the characteristics and established overall structure of traffic control system on the urban arterial road. On the basis of traffic flow characteristic under ice, the paper establishes the arrival rate model of vehicles by even distribution function of different vehicles types. The paper uses the simulation as a means to study the evaluation of study contents. Then, comparative analysis on the conventional scheme and the scheme brings forward by this paper under ice and snow. The simulation data proves that using the scheme brought forward by this paper can reduce vehicle delays significantly and adjusts traffic control parameters rapidly and effectively to adapt the change of traffic condition.
