STUDY OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE MOVEMENTS OF A RETAINING WALL ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF PRESSURES IN SATURATED SOIL /IN RUSSIAN/

FULL-SCALE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON A SAND-RETAINING WALL 2 M HIGH TO INVESTIGATE THE DISTRIBUTION AND INTENSITY OF PRESSURES ON IT. PRESSURES WERE MEASURED WITH TENSIOMETRIC GAUGES AND A SPECIAL DEVICE FOR MONITORING THE DEFORMATION OF THE WALL. THE AIM OF THE TESTS WAS TO DETERMINE THE ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE OF A HORIZONTAL EMBANKMENT WITH AND WITHOUT OVERLOAD. THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS WERE REACHED: (1) THE RESULTANT OF PRESSURES ON A PERFECTLY RIGID WALL IS 30 PERCENT GREATER THAN THE ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE. THE ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION IS NOT TRIANGULAR BUT PARABOLIC. (2) THE POINT OF APPLICATION OF ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURES VARIES AS A FUNCTION OF THE INCREASE IN THE UPWARD DISPLACEMENT OF THE WALL. (3) RELATIVE DISPLACEMENTS OF THE WALL ARE NOT THE DECISIVE CRITERION FOR ACTIVE EARTH PRESSURE; THE LATTER ALSO DEPENDS ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EMBANKMENT MATERIAL (SOIL-WALL FRICTION ANGLE, DEFORMABILITY, ETC. (4) THE DISTRIBUTION OF PRESSURES CAUSED BY THE OVERLOAD, WHICH IS NORMALLY CONSIDERED AS RECTANGULAR IN CALCULATIONS, CAN ONLY APPLY TO A SMOOTH- SURFACE WALL. IN PRACTICE, DEPENDING ON THE ROUGHNESS OF THE WALL, SOIL CHARACTERISTICS, AND THE REAL KINEMATIC CONDITIONS OF DISPLACEMENT OF THE WALL, THESE PRESSURES DECREASE WITH DEPTH. /LCPC/RRL/
