EVIDENCE FROM LITERATURE AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES IS PRESENTED FOR THE ANISOTROPY OF SOIL WITH REGARD TO UNDRAINED STRENGTH. STABILITY ANALYSIS UNDER THE ANGLE OF UNDRAINED SHEARING RESISTANCE (PHI) EQUALS 0 CONDITION, USING ANISOTROPIC STRENGTH, IS DEVELOPED FOR FREE AS WELL AS FOR RETAINED SLOPES. IN COMPARING THE STABILITY FACTORS GIVEN BY THIS METHOD WITH THOSE OF THE ISOTROPIC CASE, ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE IMPORTANCE OF ANISOTROPY IN PRACTICAL DESIGN. /RRL/A/
