A SEMI-EMPIRICAL METHOD FOR DETERMINING STRESSES BENEATH EMBANKMENTS

METHODS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE COMPLETE SOLUTION OF STRESSES AND DISPLACEMENTS WITHIN AND BENEATH EMBANKMENTS. THESE METHODS ARE EITHER EXPERIMENTAL OR NUMERICAL, INVOLVING RECOURSE TO A DIGITAL COMPUTER WITH ALL THE NECESSARY ANCILLARY WORK. FOR THE ENGINEER WISHING TO CALCULATE THE POSSIBLE SETTLEMENTS AND LATERAL DEFORMATIONS BENEATH AN EMBANKMENT, USING HIS SLIDE-RULE TOGETHER WITH SOME TABLES AND CHARTS, THERE IS AT PRESENT NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE BUT TO MAKE OVER-SIMPLIFYING ASSUMPTIONS THAT MAY LEAD TO UNNECESSARILY HIGH ERRORS. IN THIS PAPER A SIMI- EMPIRICAL METHOD IS PRESENTED WHICH, IT IS HOPED, WILL NARROW THE GAP BETWEEN INTRICATE COMPUTATIONAL WORK AND INTOLERABLE INACCURACY IN THE STUDY OF DEFORMATIONS BENEATH EMBANKMENTS. /RRL/A/
