Passenger discomfort caused by excessive lateral acceleration is greatest at maximum speed on curved tracks. If the vehicle body is tilted so as to cancel the excessive lateral acceleration affecting passengers, the limited speed on curved tracks can be raised. Methods of tilting the vehicle body include self-tilting mechanism by a natural pendular action and the powered tilting mechanism by oil cylinders or height controlled air springs. The greater part of recent electric railway vehicles in Japan are equipped with air suspension trucks, and so, it is considered most effective to tilt the body by controlling the height of the air springs.
