STRESSES AND DISPLACEMENTS IN AN ELASTIC LAYER UNDERLAIN BY A ROUGH RIGID BASE

USING BURMISTER'S THEORY, A SET OF INFLUENCE FACTORS FOR THE STRESSES IN, AND THE SURFACE DISPLACEMENT OF, AN ELASTIC LAYER WITH AN UNDERLYING ROUGH RIGID BASE, FOR POINT LOADING ON THE SURFACE OF THE LAYER, HAVE BEEN OBTAINED FOR FOUR VALUES OF POISSON'S RATIO. BY INTEGRATION OF THESE POINT LOAD FACTORS, THE CORRESPONDING INFLUENCE FACTORS FOR THE CASES OF LINE LOADING, STRIP LOADING AND SECTOR LOADING HAVE BEEN CALCULATED. IN EACH CASE, THE STRESSES GIVEN ARE SUFFICIENT TO DEFINE COMPLETELY THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION AT ANY POINT IN THE LAYER. THE ACCURACY OF THE INFLUENCE FACTORS HAS BEEN EXAMINED AND FOUND TO BE QUITE SATISFACTORY FOR PRACTICAL ENGINEERING PURPOSES. FOR THE CALCULATION OF STRESSES AND DISPLACEMENTS DUE TO ANY GENERAL SHAPE OF LOAD- ED AREA, A METHOD INVOLVING THE SUPERPOSITION OF SECTORS AND TERMED THE 'SECTOR METHOD', HAS BEEN DESCRIBED. IN CALCULATING THE STRESSES IN A SOIL MASS, THE CLASSICAL BOUSSINESQ EQUATIONS FOR A HOMOGENEOUS SEMI-INFINITE ELASTIC MEDIUM ARE COMMONLY USED. HOWEVER, COMPARISONS REVEAL THAT THE BOUSSINESQ STRESSES MAY BE SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN THE TRUE STRESSES IN A LAYER, ESPECIALLY NEAR THE BASE OF THE LAYER, WHERE A MARKED CONCENTRATION OF STRESS MAY OCCUR. THE SURFACE DISPLACEMENTS OF A LAYER HAVE, IN GENERAL, BEEN FOUND TO BE SOMEWHAT GREATER THAN THOSE CALCULATED FROM THE APPROXIMATE STEINBRENNER METHOD, ALTHOUGH USUALLY THE DIFFERENCE IS ONLY OF THE ORDER OF 15%. /RRL/A/
