LINEARLY LOADED RECTANGULAR FOUNDATION SETTLEMENT AND STRESSES (IN FRENCH)

THIS TWO-PART ARTICLE PRESENTS NUMERICAL VALUES IN TABULATED FORM FOR CALCULATING THE SETTLEMENT OF FOUNDATIONS. THE FIRST PART STUDIES SETTLEMENT PROBLEMS IN GENERAL AND DISCUSSES THE VALIDITY OF STANDARD SIMPLIFYING HYPOTHESES. IN THE SECOND PART, BASED ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE SOIL IS HOMOGENEOUS AND ELASTIC, THE SETTLEMENT OF THE FOUNDATION IS CALCULATED. SOIL STRESS DISTRIBUTION IS GIVEN AS IT ENABLES AN APPROXIMATE CALCULATION OF THE SETTLEMENT TO BE MADE WHEN THE SOIL IS HETEROGENEOUS. THE TYPE OF LINEAR LOAD CONSIDERED CAN BE USED TO FIND A SOLUTION FOR ALL PRACTICAL PROBLEMS OF FOUNDATIONS SUPPORTING AXIAL OR ECCENTRIC LOADS: BUILDINGS, RETAINING WALLS, DAMS, ETC. THE NUMERICAL VALUES OF THE COEFFICIENTS PROPOSED ARE GIVEN IN THE FORM OF TABLES OR GRAPHS. PRACTICAL EXAMPLES ARE TREATED NUMERICALLY, AND A BRIEF THEORECTICAL STUDY OF THE PROBLEM IS APPENDED. /LCPC/A/RRL/
