ATTEMPTS TO PREVENT LANDSLIDES ON THE ISLAND OF SAHALIN /IN RUSSIAN/

A SERIES OF EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES ON THE TREATMENT OF SLOPES ON THE ISLAND OF SAHALIN IS DESCRIBED. IN 1957, THE STABILITY OF THE SLOPE UNDER STUDY WAS MEASURED AND FOUND TO BE APPROXIMATELY 1.0. THE TERRAIN IS ON THE SEA SHORE, AND COMPRISES ALTERNATE LAYERS OF SANDY CLAY AND GRAVEL. THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM, PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED, HAD BEEN DESTROYED BY THE CONTINUOUS MOVEMENTS OF THE SOIL. IN 1961, A RETAINING WALL WAS CONSTRUCTED AT THE POST OF THE SLOPE, BUT WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED IN 1963. IT WAS THEN DECIDED TO RECONSTRUCT THE SLOPE AND BUILD A RETAINING STRUCTURE COVERING THE WHOLE OF THE SLIDING SURFACE. /LCPC/RRL/
