BEARING CAPACITY AND CRITICAL LOAD-TWO COMMENTS

IT HAS BEEN PROVEN EXPERIMENTALLY THAT IN CONTRAST TO PRESENT THEORIES THE POSITIVE DILATANCY INCREASES AND THE NEGATIVE DILATANCY DECREASES THE BEARING CAPACITY. THE CORRELATION OF THE BEARING CAPACITY FACTORS AND THE ANGLES INTERNAL FRICTION SUGGESTS THAT ANALOGOUS PROCESSES TAKE PLACE WHEN TESTING SHEARING STRENGTH. THE ENDEAVOUR TO EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCES IN THE ANGLES OF INTERNAL FRICTION MEASURED IN DIFFERENT APPARATUS BY DIFFERENT PROCEDURES IN TERMS OF DILATANCY CAN BE CONSIDERED AS SUCCESSFUL FROM THE QUALITATIVE POINT OF VIEW. THE EQUATION FOR THE CRITICAL LOAD AT WHICH PLASTIC ZONES IN AN ELASTIC SUBSOIL BEGIN WAS DEDUCED BY FROHLICH. TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF PORE-PRESSURE CHANGES, THE CONCEPT OF A THREE-PHASE ELASTIC SUBSOIL IS INTRODUCED. RESULTS OF THE CALCULATIONS ARE SHOWN AND COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF FROHLICH AND KARAFIATH. /LCPC/RRL/
