APPLICATION OF THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD TO PROBLEMS OF ROCK MECHANICS

A SURVEY IS PRESENTED OF THE APPLICATION OF THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD TO ROCK MECHANICS PROBLEMS. THE ELASTIC SOLUTION OF HETEROGENEOUS AND ANISOTROPIC PROBLEMS IS ILLUSTRATED BY EXAMPLES. THE METHODS OF DEALING WITH NON-LINEARITY OF ELASTIC CONSTANTS AND PLASTICITY ARE SHOWN. IT IS SHOWN HOW THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD CAN BE ADAPTED TO SOLUTION OF SUCH PROBLEMS AS THE SEEPAGE IN AN ANISOTROPIC ROCK MASS. /RRL/LCPL/
