THE USE OF THE PROTON MAGNETOMETER IN ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROTON MAGNETOMETER HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE TO CONDUCT RAPID AND ACCURATE MAGNETIC SURVEYS AS AN AID IN INVESTIGATIONS FOR ENGINEERING PROJECTS. OPERATION OF THE INSTRUMENT RELIES ON THE FACT THAT THE INTENSITY OF THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD CAN BE EVALUATED BY MEASUREMENT OF THE PROTON FREE-PRECESSION FREQUENCY. THE PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION IS BASED ON FUNDAMENTAL PROPERTIES OF THE PROTON, NAMELY THAT THE AXIS OF SPIN IS PREFERENTIALLY ALIGNED ALONG A PREVAILING MAGNETIC FIELD. THE USE OF THE PROTON MAGNETOMETER IS DESCRIBED WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE DETECTION OF ABANDONED MINE SHAFTS AND LOCAL AREAS OF FILL MATERIAL. THE PROTON MAGNETOMETER ENABLES MAGNETIC SURVEYS TO BE CARRIED OUT ECONOMICALLY AND AT A SPEED PREVIOUSLY UNATTAINABLE. THE INSTRUMENT CAN ALSO BE USEFULLY EMPLOYED TO LOCATE SOLUTION CAVITIES AND BURIED CHANNELS.
