Development of Image Processing for Tunnel Inspection Using a Vehicle-mounted Infrared Camera: Generating a Panoramic Thermal Image

The authors developed a novel algorithm for generating panoramic thermal images of tunnels from the images captured by vehicle-mounted infrared cameras so that the generated panoramic images are made the most of in a new inspection method for the concrete used in tunnels. The key point of the algorithm is the normalization of particular deformations in images, caused by scanning the wall while traveling, so that an image-matching technique can be employed for connecting the normalized adjacent images. The normalization method takes advantage of both a velocity sensor and a laser-range sensor mounted on the vehicle. Through experiments, the authors confirmed that our method could generate a panoramic thermal image in a reasonable processing time and that its quality was suitable for finding scaling and spalling.
