THE MEASUREMENT OF IN SITU ROCK STRESS USING THE PHOTOELASTIC BIAXIAL GAUGE WITH THE CORE-RELIEF TECHNIQUE

A SIMPLE AND CHEAP TECHNIQUE FOR IN SITU MEASUREMENT OF ROCK STRESS IS DESCRIBED IN DETAIL IN WHICH STRESSES IN A ROCK MASS ARE MEASURED BY OVERCORING A PHOTOELASTIC BIAXIAL GAUGE BONDED TO THE FLATTENED END OF A BOREHOLE IN THE ROCK. THIS OVERCORING IS NOT NEW BUT THE USE OF A PHOTOELASTIC BIAXIAL GAUGE OFFERS MANY ADVANTAGES OVER THE CONVENTIONAL ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE STRAIN GAUGES PREVIOUSLY USED. /GA/
