FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF STRESS METERS IN ROCK MECHANICS

A VARIETY OF TYPES OF STRESS METERS ARE BEING APPLIED IN ROCK MECHANICS FOR MEASURING THE STRESS STATE IN THE ROCK MASS AND ITS CHANGES AS A FUNCTION OF TIME. THEY ALL HAVE THE COMMON FEATURE THAT THE MEASUREMENTS ARE MOSTLY CARRIED OUT INSIDE DRILL HOLES AND THAT THE VARIABLES TO BE MEASURED ARE REPRESENTED BY THE DEFORMATIONS AND FORCES IN THEM. THE QUANTITATIVE INFORMATION OBTAINED CAN THEN BE CONVERTED INTO ROCK PRESSURE OR ITS CHANGES AT THOSE POINTS. A COMPREHENSIVE TABLE HAS BEEN COMPILED IN ORDER TO EXPLAIN CLEARLY THE SCOPE OF THE VARIOUS STRESS METERS AND TO CLASSIFY EACH TYPE AS REGARDS ITS RIGIDITY.
