Online Reservation System for Border Crossing Queue

The problem with border queues is most severe at the borders between the European Union and Russia, where an average waiting time is three days, but sometimes as long as eleven days. The Estonian Government has started a project to reduce border crossing waiting times with an overall objective of reducing the waiting time to an hour or even less. Such technology gives a great degree flexibility to road haulers, as this system enables them to plan their truck-drivers’ time and make better use of the available time. Since August 2011, GoSwift has been implemented in all border posts between Estonia (Member State of EU) and Russia. As a result of this project, actual on-site waiting times have been reduced to a minimum. Enterprises involved in international road transport are extremely satisfied with this system because it significantly increases their efficiency and thus makes it possible to offer lower prices. This presentation plans to give a brief overview of the preliminary results of the Estonian electronic border-queue project and the system’s work principles.
