AVOIDANCE – Collision Avoidance System in a Passenger Vehicle

In the last few years, Driver Assistance Systems have contributed to a significant reduction on traffic accidents and fatalities. However, there’s still room for improvement of active safety in passenger vehicles. Collision Avoidance Systems that undertake driver’s responsibility in case of imminent risk are one of the ultimate strategies to reduce the accident possibility or, in any case, to minimize its consequences, as projects such as interactIVe are showcasing. Being driver’s inattention one of the main causes of accidents, Highly Automated Driving is another relevant topic for the future of accident-free driving, as different research projects are demonstrating (e.g., HAVE-IT). This paper depicts the current development of a Collision Avoidance System combined with highly automated driving under certain circumstances undertaken by CTAG. Named AVOIDANCE, a first introduction on project objectives is provided, including the use cases and applications defined on the first phases of the project. The technical part of the description includes a description of the environment perception approach, the interaction of the autonomous control systems with the vehicle dynamics, the implementation on the vehicle’s electronic architecture and the selected HMI concept. Finally, a chapter on project first results is included, before ending with next steps and conclusions.
