THE BEHAVIOR OF SOIL-CEMENT PAVEMENTS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE PROBLEM OF CRACKING

THE RESULTS OF RECENT LABORATORY AND PILOT-SCALE INVESTIGATIONS OF SOME FACTORS WHICH AFFECT THE CARCKING OF SOIL-CEMENT BASES ARE DISCUSSED. THE SPACING OF CRACKS THAT ARE ENTIRELY DUE TO SHRINKAGE WAS SHOWN TO BE MUCH GREATER THAN THE CRACK SPACINGS THAT ARE COMMONLY OBSERVED IN ROADS CONSISTING OF SOIL-CEMENT BASES WITH THIN BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS. WHEN SECTIONS OF PILOT-SCALE BASE WERE TRAFFICKED, THE SPACING OF THE CRACKS WAS SIMILAR TO THE SPACING OBSERVED IN ACTUAL SOIL-CEMENT ROADS AND APPEARED TO BE RELATED TO THE AGE OF THE SOIL-CEMENT WHEN TRAFFIC WAS FIRST INTRODUCED. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE CHARACTERISTIC CRACKING OBSERVED IN SOIL-CEMENT BASES IS MOST OFTEN THE RESULT OF TRAFFIC LOADS RATHER THAN SHRINKAGE STRESSES. METHODS OF CONTROLLING THE SPACING OF CRACKS ARE DISCUSSED, AND IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE EARLY STRESSING OF SOIL-CEMENT BASES WITH ROLLERS MAY BE AN EFFICIENT METHOD FOR PREDETERMINING THE CRACK SIZE AND SPACING. /AUTHOR/
