America's Rails-with-Trails: A Resource for Planners, Agencies and Advocates on Trails Along Active Railroad Corridors

This report looks at rails-with-trails, trails that are located alongside active railway lines. A survey of 88 rail-with-trail managers and a literature review were conducted. Literature review topics include: feasibility studies, railroad policies, liability, and safety. Survey responses include information on land ownership, railroad characteristics, attitude of railroad companies, trail design, and liability and insurance. Eleven case studies from around the United States are also included.
