Cutting costs with a ballastless trackform
Development of a 'competitive' design of slab track is underway in France. This track could be installed as quickly as ballasted track, yet at a lower cost than existing designs. In addition, thanks to the very long life of the main structural elements, it also offers lower maintenance and renewal costs. This so-called "New Ballastless Track" (NBT) is intended to support both high speed passenger operations at up to 360 km/h, as well as mixed passenger and freight operations with 25 ton axle loads. The NBT design was inspired by existing pavement methods and strengthened by experience in structural engineering. The prototype section is set to enter service within a few months of publication of this article.
