Darwin CBD Parking Strategy: a coming of age
Like many modern capital cities, Darwin is on a continuum trying to balance the parking and travel demand needs (wants) of the community. While businesses and the community continue to want convenient and low cost parking, the increasing growth of Darwin as a vibrant city centre, and pressure to operate existing Council car parks in a commercial (competitive) environment, demanded a holistic review of the Darwin CBD Parking Strategy. The review was necessary to ensure that a policy framework and approach to car parking provision and management in the Darwin CBD is in place to accommodate the expected growth of the city. The new strategy aims to support liveability, sustainability and the economic growth of the city of Darwin. The development of the new CBD Parking Strategy was based on a comprehensive review of previous Northern Territory Government and City of Darwin policies, economic evaluation and modelling, on and off street parking surveys, and widespread community and stakeholder consultation. The new CBD Parking Strategy provides an incremental approach to changing the parking landscape to one that balances short and long term parking needs, supports alternative transport modes, is congruent with overarching land use and transport planning activities, and is commercially viable.
