Road safety and asset management: using the asset data base to identify and address road safety

In 2012 two significant topics of research were completed which clearly demonstrated the existing and potential links that exist between Road Safety and Asset Management: AT1692 Asset Management within a Safe Road System Framework and ST1571 National Risk Assessment Model, Program Development & Trials. The Austroads National Risk Assessment Model (ANRAM) provides road managers with the opportunity to assess the road network for risk in accordance with Safe System philosophies. This model builds on the existing body of work that has been undertaken nationally by ARRB Group through tools such as Road Safety Risk Manager, NetRisk and AusRAP, together with international research by the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) and KiwiRAP. This paper demonstrates how by sharing knowledge, systems and data closer, links between road safety practitioners and asset managers can be achieved. The paper also outlines the key recommendations of the two relevant Austroads Research projects AT1692 Asset Management within a Safe Road System Framework and ST1571 – National Risk Assessment Model, Program Development & Trials.
